CIGNA Adds Pharmacist to Disability Management Clinical Team
  • The pharmacist will focus on the role of medication impacts/effects in the disability management process
  • Will identify prescription-related trends and strategies to help people stay at work or to be successful in returning to work from disability
PHILADELPHIA, April 12, 2011 - Underscoring the importance of integrating clinical disciplines into the disability and absence management program, CIGNA announced today that it’s adding a pharmacist as a new member of CIGNA's disability management clinical team, focusing on the role of medication and medication adherence in disability management and stay at work and return to work strategies.

“When looking at the array of tools available to help people prevent disability or return to work from a disabling injury or illness, prescription medication often plays a very important role, ” said Mark Marsters, senior vice president, Group Operations, for CIGNA. “Having a pharmacist specifically dedicated to the disability management process will provide added expertise and focus on how medication relates to work safety, recovery delays, and return to work and stay at work plans.”

Responsibilities for the role include reviewing the prescription regimen when multiple medications are being used to identify the potential for drug interaction issues or medication side effects that could impede a person’s recovery and return to work. J. Aeon Munkittrick will be the first to fill the role of disability management pharmacist. He brings eight years experience in both hospital staff and clinical positions. He recently served as a clinical pharmacist at University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona.

He will work closely with CIGNA teams associated with both stay-at-work and return-to-work programs, including claims managers, nurse case managers, behavioral specialists, vocational counselors and medical directors. He will also work with a customer’s doctor or other health care professional and pharmacist, when appropriate, and with the CIGNA Pharmacy Management team when the customer has both disability and pharmacy coverage with CIGNA.
